Windsor Ruins
The Windsor Ruins near Port Gibson Mississippi, are those of the largest antebellum Greek Revival mansion built in the state, and have been used in various motion pictures. At one time the plantation covered 2,600 acres. Smith Coffee Daniell II, who was born in Mississippi in 1826, the son of an Indian fighter turned farmer and landowner, constructed the mansion itself in 1859-1861. Basic construction of the house, which was designed by David Shroder was done by slave labor. The bricks for use in the 45-foot columns were made in a kiln across the road from the house. The columns were then covered with mortar and plaster. There were 29 of these columns supporting the projecting roof line with its plain, broad frieze and molded cornice. This provided protection for the galleries that encompassed the house at the second and third levels. The fluted columns had iron Corinthian capitals and were joined at the galleries by an ornamental iron balustrade.
The mansion contained twenty-five rooms with twenty-five fireplaces, with a basement containing a school room, dairy, and supply rooms.
The home survived the war only to be totally destroyed on February 17, 1890, by a fire said to have been caused by a party guest who carelessly dropped a cigarette.
Windsor’s ruins have appeared in several motion pictures including the 1957 filmRaintree County starring Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift and most recently in the 1996 movie Ghosts of Mississippi with Whoopi Goldberg, Alec Baldwin and James Woods.

Windsor Ruins are located 12 miles from port Gibson on Mississippi Highway 552.

Vicksburg National Military Park
Vicksburg National Military Park preserves the site of the American Civil War Battle of Vicksburg, waged from March 29 to July 4, 1863. The park, located in Vicksburg, Mississippi (flanking the Mississippi River), also commemorates the greater Vicksburg Campaign which led up to the battle. Reconstructed forts and trenches evoke memories of the 47-day siege that ended in the surrender of the city. Victory here and at Port Hudson, farther south in Louisiana, gave the Union control of the Mississippi River.
The park includes 1,325 historic monuments and markers, 20 miles of historic trenches and earthworks, a 16-mile tour road, a 12.5-mile walking trail, two antebellum homes, 144 emplaced cannons, the restored gunboat USS Cairo (sunk on December 12, 1862, on the Yazoo River), and the Grant’s Canal site, where the Union Army attempted to build a canal to let their ships bypass Confederate artillery fire.
The Cairo, also known as the “Hardluck Ironclad,” was the first U.S. ship in history to be sunk by a torpedo/mine. It was recovered from the Yazoo in 1964.
The Illinois State Memorial has 47 steps, one for every day Vicksburg was besieged.

From the east — Take Interstate 20 west to Vicksburg, Mississippi. Use exit ramp 4B. Follow Clay Street (US-80) west 0.25 miles to park entrance.
From the north — Take Interstate 55 south to Jackson, Mississippi. (To save time, use Interstate 220 bypass on west side of Jackson.) Take Interstate 20 west to Vicksburg (approximately 40 miles). Use exit ramp 4B. Follow Clay Street (US-80) west 0.25 miles to park entrance.
From the south — Take Interstate 55 or US Highway 49 to Jackson, Mississippi. Take Interstate 20 west to Vicksburg, Mississippi, (approximately 40 miles). Use exit ramp 4B. Follow Clay Street (US-80) west 0.25 miles to park entrance.
From the west — Take Interstate 20 east to Vicksburg, Mississippi. Use exit ramp 4B. Follow Clay Street (US-80) west 0.25 miles to park entrance.

Hours:
Tour Road is open to vehicles from 8am-5pm. Last vehicle entry on the tour road is 4:45pm.
Park Roads are open to pedesterians and bicyclists from sunrise to sunset.

There are all facilities in Vicksburg and the park is located right in Vicksburg. There is also a visitor center with park store and restrooms.

Round Island Lighthouse
Round Island Lighthouse stood from 1859 to 1998 on the southwest end of Round Island in the Mississippi Sound, 4 miles south of Pascagoula, Mississippi. In September 1998, the lighthouse was toppled by Hurricane Georges. In 2010, the base of the structure and other lighthouse remnants were removed from Round Island and relocated within the City of Pascagoula for restoration.
In 1833, the United States Lighthouse Board contracted for construction of a lighthouse on Round Island in the Mississippi Sound. By 1854, the Lighthouse Board determined that the structure was poorly built and was too close to the water, which eroded the foundation. Construction of a second lighthouse along with a keeper’s dwelling was contracted and completed in 1859 at a cost of $7,130.97. The 1859 tower stood 50 feet tall with a focal plane of 44 feet above sea level and had a visible range of 10 to 12 nautical miles; 19 to 23 kilometres (12 to 14 mi) from a fourth order Fresnel lens.
During the American Civil War (1861-1865), the Fresnel lens was removed from Round Island Lighthouse by Confederate soldiers and transported to Montgomery, Alabama for safekeeping.
Round Island Lighthouse was automated in 1944 but was deactivated 5 years later. After deactivation, the U.S. Coast Guard maintained the lighthouse as a day beacon, without illumination, through 1954.
In 1955, the lighthouse, dwelling, pier, and outbuildings were declared excess property by the General Services Administration. Through the years, the lighthouse suffered from vandalism, disrepair, and wave erosion. In 1986, the lighthouse and approximately 50 acres of land were deeded to the City of Pascagoula by the Bureau of Land Management. The lighthouse was added the National Register of Historic Places on October 9, 1986.
In September 1998, Round Island Lighthouse was toppled by Hurricane Georges. Plans were made to rebuild the lighthouse at its original location on Round Island, and construction was initiated. However, in August 2005, rebuilding efforts ended when Hurricane Katrina destroyed the partially reconstructed lighthouse. Because of the precarious location on Round Island, that exposed the lighthouse to erosion and destruction from future storms, the Pascagoula City Council made a decision to rebuild the lighthouse within the City of Pascagoula, using as much of the original construction materials as could be salvaged from the island. As of 2012, the original base of the lighthouse and the restored lantern gallery had been secured at their new location, just south of U.S. Route 90 in Pascagoula. By July 2014, the exterior of the lighthouse had been restored and topped with the original lantern gallery.

Pascagoula Mississippi, take Highway 90 to the east side of the Pascagoula River, and you will see the restored lighthouse on the south side of the road near the intersection with Pascagoula Street.

Tours are available 10am to 5pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Part of the Pascagoula Area Attractions Pass which offers admission to the Round Island Lighthouse, Grand Bay NERR, LaPointe-Krebs House and Museum, Pascagoula River Audubon Center, Scranton Museum, and Scranton Nature Center for $14 (adults) and $8 (children).
Hours:
The lighthouse is open for tours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
The lighthouse is owned by the City of Pascagoula. Grounds open, tower closed.

Rodney Mississippi
Rodney is a former city in Jefferson County in southwest Mississippi, approximately 32 miles northeast of Natchez. Rodney was founded in 1828, and in the 19th century, it was only three votes away from becoming the capital of the Mississippi Territory. Its population declined to nearly zero after the Mississippi River changed course. Today a small number of inhabitants remain but the area is considered a ghost town. The Rodney Center Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Alston’s Grocery Store, actually a country general store, closed many years ago, but the building still stands. In the northeast corner of the town is a small park where regular band concerts were held by the Jefferson County Band. On the northwest corner are remains of a wooden drugstore. West of Alston’s Grocery is the one surviving structure on Batchelor Street. Located at the southwest corner is a two-story brick structure. At the western end of Batchelor St. is Mt. Zion No. 1 Baptist Church, a white frame structure combining several styles of architecture which was constructed in 1850. The Presbyterian Church has a solid shot above the middle window which appears to have been fired by a 12 lb. Napoleon. It hit the facade of the church when a group of officers from the USS Rattler decided to attend services one Sunday and a unit of Confederate cavalry from Grand Gulf began the process of arresting them all as prisoners of war. Shooting started and the Rattler returned fire striking the Church (Note: The shell one sees lodged in the facade of the church today is not the original round. That particular missile has been lost to history. The current round, cemented in place for safety, was placed there during a restoration in the 1990s). The minister, a known valium online international Union sympathizer, left town shortly thereafter.

Pass Christian Harbor
Pass Christian Harbor is a worthwhile stop. The harbor is home to a large shrimp fleet as well as an impressive assortment of recreational vessels. You can watch the shrimp boats come and go, or perhaps strike up a conversation with the shrimpers as they unload their catch. The fishing boats make a fantastic photo subject with bright colors and lots of detail.
This area offers pristine, white sand beaches and the blue-gray waters of the Mississippi Sound on one side, and beautiful oaks and stately antebellum homes on the other.
Pass Christian was in the path of two of the most intense hurricanes ever to hit the United States–Hurricane Camille on August 17, 1969, and Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005. Each hurricane caused the near total destruction of the city.
On August 29, 2005, Pass Christian was almost completely destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Of the approximately 8,000 homes in Pass Christian, all but 500 were damaged or destroyed. In spite of the fact that the beachfront Scenic Drive follows the crest of a small bluff, affording it some elevation, most of the historic mansions along the road were severely damaged, and many were completely destroyed, including the superbly restored Greek Revival mansion “Union Quarters” described in the National Register of Historic Places as having been built in 1855.

There is no cost to visit the harbor, unless you want to dock your boat.

Office Hours 8AM-4PM however Harbor Patrol is available 24/7 at 228-452-5128.
Facilities:
Pass Christian’s downtown shopping area, which includes a variety of restaurants and shops, as well as two hardware stores, is just across the street from the harbor. There are several seafood restaurants on the harbor.
