Niagara Falls State Park     Niagara Falls State Park is located in the City of Niagara Falls in Niagara County, New York, United States. The park, recognized as the oldest state park in the United States, contains the American Falls, the Bridal Veil Falls, and a portion of the Horseshoe Falls. In addition to its views of the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and the Canadian Falls, the park overlooks the Niagara Gorge and allows access to the Maid of the Mist tour boats, Cave of the Winds, Goat Island, the Prospect Point Observation Tower, a statue of Nikola Tesla, and the IMAX movie Niagara: Miracles, Myths and Magic which is shown at the Niagara Adventure Theater. The views of Horseshoe Falls are not near as good as what you can see from the Canadian side of the river (you will need a passport), however this is definitely worth the visit and offers many opportunities not available on the canadian side. Cave of the Winds This was my favorite part of my trip here, it is amazing to be this close to the power of the waterfall. The Cave of the Winds was a natural cave behind Bridal Veil Falls at the Niagara Falls. The cave was some 130 feet high, 100 feet wide and 30 feet in depth. It was discovered in 1834, and originally dubbed Aeolus’s Cave, after the Greek god of winds. Guided tours began officially in 1841, through Goat Island and descending down a staircase closer to the falls, into the cave. The cave was obliterated in a massive 1954 rockfall and subsequent dynamiting of a dangerous overhang. Today, the “Cave of the Winds” is the name of a tourist attraction near the same site. You ride an elevator 175 feet deep into the Niagara Gorge. Then you walk over a series of wooden walkways to the famous “Hurricane Deck”.  As you stand at the railing, you are a mere 20 feet from the billowing torrents of Bridal Veil Falls. The decking is removed each fall due to the potential damage caused by ice buildup at the falls and re-installed each spring by park officials for sightseers to enjoy the experience. The decking is not secured to the rocks below by bolts or other construction materials; the wood beam supports are simply wedged into the rock crevices. Where it is: The best Niagara Falls address for your GPS system is: 24 Buffalo Avenue Niagara Falls, NY, 14303 The State Park does not have an actual physical address, therefore, this will bring you to the cross streets of 1st Street and Buffalo Avenue – which is the intersection at the entrance to the park and the base of the bridge to Goat Island. Drones In Niagara Falls State Park, (per FAA rule 14 CFR 93 Sub E), there is a flight restriction in the vicinity of Niagara Falls State Park that amounts to a No Fly Zone. All flights below 3,500 feet are restricted, Therefore, UAS are prohibited in Niagara Falls State Park. No permit will be issued.   Dunkirk Lighthouse The Dunkirk Lighthouse, also known as the Point Gratiot Light, is an active lighthouse located at Point Gratiot on Lake Erie in New York state. The lighthouse was established in 1826 and the current tower was first lit in 1875. The lighthouse was automated in 1960 and is still operational. The foundation is made out of dressed stone and the lighthouse is made out of rubblestone encased in brick. The tower is square-shaped with the upper two thirds in white and the lower third left natural and the lantern housing in red. The original lens is a third order Fresnel lens installed in 1857 in the original 1826 light and is still in operation. Its being still in use makes it a rarity. Only 70 such lenses are operational in the United States, 16 being on the Great Lakes of which two are in New York. At the entrance to the park property is the South Buffalo North Side Light, formerly located in Buffalo Harbor. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places as Point Gratiot Lighthouse Complex in 1979. The Dunkirk Lighthouse is open seasonally from May through October. Charlotte Genesee Lighthouse The Charlotte–Genesee Lighthouse is an 1822 stone octagonal lighthouse in the Charlotte neighborhood in northern Rochester, New York, United States. The 40 ft tower is located on Lake Ontario at the mouth of the Genesee River. It originally had 10 whale oil Argand lamps, which were replaced with a Fresnel lens in 1853. On February 28, 1881, the lighthouse was turned off. After nearby piers changed the mouth of the river, it was far from the water. The light was then moved to a pier in 1884. In 1965, Charlotte High School students started a letter writing campaign to save the lighthouse from impending destruction. It was declared surplus in 1981 by the government. It is now owned by Monroe County and managed as a museum by the Charlotte Genesee Lighthouse Historical Society, a nonprofit volunteer organization. It is part of the Seaway Trail, a National Scenic Byway. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is also a City of Rochester Landmark. It is open to the public. As of 2014, the lighthouse is active, and listed in the United States Coast Guard Light List as light number 2333. If you are looking for a wonderful opportunity to get personal individual instruction, I do private workshops and classes at a location of your choice, whether doing a location photo shoot, coming to your home or business, traveling across the country on a road trip, or at my classroom.  This is a fantastic way to learn digital workflow and be sure that your computer equipment is properly configured for optimum performance. Buffalo Main Lighthouse The lighthouse was established and lit in 1833 and was deactivated in 1914. The foundation material was stone molehead and the lighthouse was constructed out of limestone and cast iron. The shape of the tower was octagonal and was 60 feet high. The lens installed in 1857 was a third order Fresnel lens. The lens was later removed to the Buffalo History Museum. This 60-foot-tall, octagonal limestone structure is the oldest still standing in its original location in the city of Buffalo. It replaced the original 1818 light on this site along the Lake Erie shore at the mouth of the Buffalo River. Presently, it is part of an outdoor museum located on the grounds of the United States Coast Guard Station. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. In 2010, the Coast Guard announced it would relinquish 4.6 acres of its 31 acres on the point and Congressman Brian Higgins obtained over $6 million to reconfigure the Coast Guard station to allow public access to the lighthouse. In April 2011, Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation approved a grant of $170,700 to repair and restore the lighthouse in anticipation of public tours. The work was completed in August 2011. Barcelona Lighthouse Barcelona Light, also known as Portland Harbor Light, is a lighthouse overlooking Barcelona Harbor on Lake Erie in the Town of Westfield, New York. The First Natural Gas Lighthouse. Finished in 1829, the 40-foot tall Barcelona Lighthouse (Portland Harbor) was the very first natural gas lighthouse in the world. It was in Federal Lighthouse Service until 1859. At that time it became privately held through various owners until 2007, when New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation acquired it. Though it no longer has the original lens, nor is used for navigational purposes, it is still lit and visible today through an agreement with the Town of Westfield. The lighthouse is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historical Places. The lighthouse was established in 1829 through the efforts of Thomas B. Campbell. The conical tower and attached keeper’s cottage were constructed of fieldstone, with a natural, emplaced foundation. The light was emitted by eleven lamps with 14-inch reflectors. It was the first lighthouse in the world to be powered by natural gas, which Campbell transported from a “burning spring” about a mile distant by means of wooden pipes. Thirty years later, in 1859, the lighthouse was deactivated, but it still stands lit today after over 100 years in private ownership, it is now owned by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. Where it is: From Interstate 90, take Exit 60 and go north on Portage Road to Highway 5. Turn right on Highway 5, and the lighthouse will be on your left after just a short distance. New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation acquired Barcelona Lighthouse in 2008, and the keeper’s cottage is now home to the Westfield Visitor Center during the summer.
