Learn To See Photographically
During this 1 day workshop we will do a combination of classroom instruction, location photo shoot, and follow up post processing and critique session.
Composition is one of the most important aspects of a great photo, but is often one of the least taught elements of photography. You can have all of the technical knowledge of your camera and the best light and location, but still fail if the image lacks good composition.
A photograph is a collection of visual design elements arranged within a frame. Composition is the deliberate arrangement of design elements in a pleasing or compelling manner. In contrast, a snapshot is the result of just clicking the shutter without forethought or planning. The difference is one of taking a photograph, versus making it.
We will discuss in detail Elements of Composition including:
- Center of interest
- Subject placement
- Simplicity
- Viewpoint and camera angle
- Balance
- Shapes and lines
- Pattern
- Texture
- Tone
- Contrast
- Framing
- Foreground
- Background
- Perspective
Additional Topics Covered Include:
- We will cover Rules guidelines of composition and when to break them.
- Learn to draw the viewer into and through the image.
- We will learn how to use post processing techniques such as burning and dodging, vignettes, tone, color, and many more to improve our composition.
- Critique of student images from the workshop.
